NYTimes Arts Section: "Now we review City Ballet with different fonts"

Looks like The New York Times redesigned their daily Arts section, the Sunday Arts & Leisure section, and the Book Review. It took me by surprise, and I’ve only had one or two days in which to form an opinion (ok well I formed my initial negative opinion before I even saw it, when they announced the redesign’s premiere the day before) but in short, despite the fact that I hate the new headline fonts and the whole idea behind redesigning the sections in general, I must say that the layout is better. Kind of like when The New Yorker redesigned 10 years ago. I grumbled, but in fact, they were right…it seems more readable, and more clearly structured. It actually gave me pause for a moment to consider: was it poorly structured all these years and I just didn’t notice? So I’m leaning towards a Newman stamp of approval, except for those fruity/nouveau headline fonts. Why? To make it look more like the Kansas City Star’s Entertainment pages? Oh Grey Lady. You have a font named after you. Stick with it, please. It suits you.
