Isaac Stern said it was OK

Last night the St. Charles East High School Wind Ensemble, directed by Jim Kull, blasted out a program of New York premieres in the rarified air of Carnegie Hall. Avenue X, Steven Bryant’s Rise, and John Mackey’s Sasparilla all sounded fantastic, even with SB and I getting to wave our arms around on our pieces. So thanks to Jim and Gil and the ensemble for my official conducting debut in the Isaac Stern Auditorium—it couldn’t have been more fun. The pics are flooding in … and the giddy smiles on everyone’s face tells the tale well.

I can also report that the swankiness of the hall goes well beyond the chandelier and private boxes … on returning backstage after conducting AveX, I was immediately handed a towel and a glass of bottled water. It’s the little things…
